Dear Colleagues,
Ecosystems have been experiencing ongoing detrimental effects of climate change and man-made disasters on a global scale. The structural, functional, and ecological degradation of ecosystems are issues that are bound to receive significant attention. Soil microorganisms are one of the most crucial components of these ecosystems, regulating the processes of biogeochemical cycles and energy flows. Their composition and diversity are sensitive biological indicators of the above-mentioned ecosystem disturbance. Ecosystem disturbance leads to dramatic changes in vegetation composition and growth, as well as soil physicochemical properties and aggregates. Soil microbial composition and function are shaped by both aboveground vegetation and underground soil nutrients and characteristics. Therefore, it is of key importance to investigate the variation mechanisms of soil microbial composition and function during vegetation changes, particularly under the influence of natural and man-made disasters.
In recent years, research focus has shifted their focus towards the role of soil microbial function under stress with the aid of recent molecular advances such as metagenomics. The response of soil microbial composition and function to vegetation composition changes and ecosystem degradation has been a hot topic in terrestrial ecosystems. This Special Issue aims to provide a forum for researchers to share the latest findings in the mechanisms by which soil microbial composition and function are affected by terrestrial ecosystem degradation, such as in forests, wetlands, grasslands, and agricultural landscapes. High-quality original research and review articles in this field are welcome for submission.
Research topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Soil microbial composition and diversity variations in different vegetation compositions in temperate ecosystems;
- Soil microbial function and structure variation under the plant invasion process in temperate degraded ecosystems;
- Soil microbial composition and diversity changes and their impacts on biogeochemical cycles after vegetation succession in temperate ecosystems;
- Impacts of forest-type change on soil microbial structure and function;
- Impacts of global climate change and human activities on the variations in vegetation and soil microorganisms.
Please note that publications regarding terrestrial microbiology should not include descriptive manuscripts with only amplicon or metagenomic data. All the manuscripts should be hypothesis-driven and validated via experiments.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Diversity is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
