Catalytic Biomass Depolymerization and Conversion to High-Value Fuels and Chemicals
This special issue belongs to the section "Biomass Catalysis".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The urgent need for sustainable energy systems and environmentally friendly chemical production has intensified global interest in biomass as a renewable feedstock. Biomass depolymerization and catalytic conversion represent promising strategies for transforming abundant lignocellulosic resources, agricultural residues, and biowaste into high‑value fuels and platform chemicals. Recent advancements in catalytic science, reaction engineering, biomass pretreatment, and process intensification have opened new opportunities to improve efficiency, selectivity, and scalability in biomass valorization.
This Special Issue focuses on state‑of‑the‑art research and emerging technologies related to catalytic approaches for biomass depolymerization and downstream conversion. We welcome innovative contributions that enhance our fundamental understanding, promote green chemistry principles, and support the development of circular bio‑economy pathways.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Catalytic depolymerization of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose;
- Development of heterogeneous, homogeneous, enzymatic, and hybrid catalyst systems;
- Novel catalytic pathways for bio‑oil upgrading and biofuel production;
- Reaction mechanisms and structure–activity relationships;
- Advanced biomass pretreatment and fractionation methods enabling efficient catalysis;
- Conversion of biomass-derived intermediates to platform chemicals;
- Process intensification, reactor design, and scale‑up strategies;
- Integrated biorefinery concepts and techno‑economic or life‑cycle analysis.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Catalysts is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
