Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Despite significant research efforts and advancements in treatment, breast cancer continues to be one of the most common malignancies and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women worldwide. The risk of disease recurrence and the emergence of metastatic lesions continue to present substantial challenges in clinical management. A key factor underlying these challenges is the existence of cancer stem cells, a subpopulation of tumor cells with the unique ability to self-renew, differentiate, and evade conventional therapies. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that both intrinsic and extrinsic cues play a critical role in controlling cancer stem cell function, which influences disease progression, metastasis, and resistance to therapy. This Special Issue explores the latest research on breast cancer stem cells, highlighting the complex and reciprocal interactions with their surrounding microenvironment at both primary and metastatic sites. It further underscores recent advances in therapeutic approaches targeting breast cancer stem cells and their interactions with the microenvironment, as well as recent work in the development of in vitro systems to model these interactions. Such advancements offer promising new directions for more effective and individualized treatments in breast cancer.
