Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Traditional architecture in developing regions stands as a testament to human ingenuity, reflecting a profound understanding of local environmental dynamics, cultural traditions and community needs. For centuries, indigenous builders have crafted dwellings, villages and cities that seamlessly integrate with their natural surroundings, demonstrating an inherent wisdom that prioritizes sustainability, resilience and cultural continuity. However, amidst the rapid urbanization and modernization sweeping across developing regions, traditional architectural practices are facing unprecedented challenges. The allure of modernity often leads to the neglect or outright abandonment of age-old building techniques, materials and design principles. As a result, many communities are losing touch with their architectural heritage, while simultaneously grappling with pressing issues such as environmental degradation, resource scarcity and social inequality.

As such, it is of great importance to re-evaluate the role of traditional architecture in the pursuit of sustainable urbanization and ecological adaptation in developing regions. By tapping into the wealth of knowledge embedded within traditional building practices, innovative solutions to contemporary challenges can be comprehensively uncovered. Moreover, revitalizing traditional architecture not only promotes environmental sustainability, but also fosters a sense of cultural identity, social cohesion and community empowerment.

This Special Issue seeks to illuminate the intrinsic value of traditional architecture in the context of sustainable development, with a particular focus on rural, remote and underdeveloped areas. By exploring the intersection of traditional wisdom with emerging concepts such as smart technologies, regionalism and ecological resilience, we aim to inspire dialogue, innovation and action toward more inclusive and environmentally sensitive built environments. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange, we can harness the lessons of the past to inform the design, planning and governance of resilient and culturally vibrant cities and communities. By embracing the principles of traditional architecture, we can pave the way toward a more sustainable, equitable and harmonious future for all.

Envelope-parameter optimization for residential buildings is strongly climate-dependent, yet previous studies have mainly focused on single parameters or specific regions, limiting cross-climate comparison of parameter priorities. This study establishes a unified DeST-based residential building model to compare the effects of external wall insulation thickness and external surface solar absorptivity on heating load, cooling load, annual total load, and operational carbon emissions across five representative climate zones in China. Yinchuan, Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, and Kunming were selected as case cities. Single-factor analysis, two-parameter coupling analysis, supplementary sensitivity analysis, and load-to-carbon translation were conducted under consistent building prototypes, operating boundaries, and evaluation indices. The results show that the effects of the two parameters differ markedly across climate zones, reflecting a transition in parameter dominance under different heating–cooling load structures. Over the tested ranges, insulation thickness changes annual total load by up to approximately 10%, whereas solar absorptivity changes it by only 0.17–1.91%. Mechanistically, insulation reduces winter heat loss but may suppress summer heat dissipation, while solar absorptivity directly affects exterior-surface solar heat gains. Further carbon analysis shows that load-optimal configurations do not necessarily correspond to carbon-optimal configurations. These findings provide quantitative support for climate-adaptive and low-carbon envelope design. Full article

This study examines the kalif structure, a unique and increasingly invisible component of the rural architecture in the Eastern Black Sea region that is currently under threat of extinction, along with the tradition of kalif-guarding integrated with this structure. Historically constructed to protect agricultural production from wildlife, kalifs are not merely functional shelters but also multi-layered memory objects where collective solidarity and social interaction are reproduced. A qualitative research method was adopted for the study, utilizing literature review, on-site physical documentation, and technical analysis centered on Yücehisar village in the Pazar district of Rize. Within the scope of the research, the material use and construction techniques of kalifs are detailed from an architectural perspective, and these practices are evaluated through the lens of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The findings indicate that the loss of the physical presence of kalifs due to the transition from corn to tea cultivation and rural migration signifies the dissolution of a production-based culture of living. Consequently, the study reveals the critical importance of incorporating the kalif and the act of kalif-guarding into academic literature and cultural memory within the framework of Intangible Cultural Heritage standards to preserve local identity and rural memory.
