Sustainable Building Technologies: Equipment Performance, Built Environment, and Building Retrofit
This special issue belongs to the section "Building Energy, Physics, Environment, and Systems".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Against the backdrop of climate change, accelerating urbanization, and the growing demand for occupant health, buildings are increasingly expected to achieve a coordinated improvement in both energy efficiency and healthy indoor environments. Sustainable building technologies play a central role in meeting these expectations by advancing integrated, evidence-based solutions that improve building performance while supporting occupant health and well-being across the building life cycle.
In engineering practice, the development of sustainable buildings requires coordinated efforts across multiple dimensions, including the enhancement of building system and equipment performance, the optimization of indoor environmental quality (IEQ), and the renovation and upgrading of existing building stocks. Research in this field spans innovations in HVAC systems and heating and cooling sources, optimization of building envelope performance, indoor thermal comfort and air quality, intelligent control and operational optimization, as well as building retrofit solutions targeting human well-being. Current research trends increasingly emphasize deployable technological pathways, quantitative performance evaluation, and validation in real-world applications, rather than remaining at the level of conceptual design.
This Special Issue of Buildings, titled “Sustainable Building Technologies: Equipment Performance, Built Environment, and Building Retrofit”, welcomes high-quality original contributions and high-impact works related to the above-stated topics.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
