Human Factors and Safety Management in Construction

Dear Colleagues,

The construction industry continues to experience disproportionately high rates of occupational injuries and fatalities worldwide, underscoring the urgent need for innovative and human-centered safety solutions. Despite advances in technology and regulatory frameworks, construction workers remain exposed to complex physical, cognitive and organizational risks. Addressing these challenges requires integrating human factors, safety management strategies and proactive design interventions to create safer and more sustainable work environments.

This Special Issue on “Human Factors and Safety Management in Construction” aims to bring together interdisciplinary research that advances theory, methodology and practice in construction safety. We welcome contributions that explore prevention through design (PtD), safety climate and culture, behavior-based safety, occupational ergonomics and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) for hazard identification, training and risk mitigation. Emphasis is also placed on sustainable safety practices and innovative approaches in civil engineering education that prepare future professionals to prioritize worker well-being. By combining design-driven thinking, evidence-based safety management and technological innovation, this Special Issue seeks to promote systemic improvements that protect workers, enhance organizational performance and strengthen safety culture across the global construction sector.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
