Large Language Models for Planning and Decision-Making in Autonomous Unmanned Systems
This special issue belongs to the section "Smart Transportation and Autonomous Vehicles".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid evolution of Foundation Models—particularly Large Language Models (LLMs) and their multimodal extensions—has opened a transformative frontier for autonomous unmanned systems. Traditional planning and decision-making frameworks often rely on rigid rule-based logic or classic optimization, which can struggle with zero-shot generalization in complex, unstructured environments. By integrating LLMs, unmanned platforms (such as ground vehicles, aerial robots, and marine vessels) gain unprecedented capabilities in open-vocabulary semantic reasoning, complex task decomposition, and intuitive human–system interaction. This Special Issue invites original research and review articles focusing on novel architectures, algorithmic frameworks, and edge-deployment strategies that bridge the gap between high-level cognitive reasoning and low-level physical control.
This Special Issue strictly emphasizes practical deployment and the seamless integration of LLMs with classic control and automation frameworks. Aligning with the core focus of the Automation journal, this Special Issue provides a dedicated platform for researchers and engineers working at the intersection of advanced artificial intelligence, control theory, and mechatronics. We highly encourage authors to submit works demonstrating how LLMs and cognitive AI paradigms can be practically integrated into automated systems. If your research addresses traditional bottlenecks in trajectory generation, dynamic task planning, system safety, or multi-agent coordination through large-model-driven approaches, we welcome your contributions to help shape the future of true intelligent automation.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Automation is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
