Fog-Computing-Enabled Applications, Use Cases and Verticals

We are happy to announce that a Special Issue of MDPI Applied Sciences on "Fog-Computing-Enabled Applications, Use Cases and Verticals" is currently accepting submissions.

The increased number of services and applications used in different use cases and scenarios has emphasized the importance of processing infrastructure. While cloud computing has been broadly considered in recent years, it has shown some limitations—mainly related to cloud computing facilities locations which are often far from the source and/or destination of data. At the same time, new services have been introduced requiring reduced latency, increased reliability, and the management of massive amounts of data, showing the limitations of the cloud computing approach. Fog computing is a novel paradigm that has recently been introduced, aiming at implementing a near-to-the-user layer able to support and forecast service requests while avoiding the use of centralized computing resources, allowing low-latency response and proactive service deployments. Due to its pervasive nature, fog computing can be considered as a strategic building block for several applications, use cases, and verticals foreseen to be deployed in the upcoming 5G systems. The aim of this Special Issue is to attract the most recent research results in fog-computing-based applications in different vertical markets, including automotive, manufacturing, Industry 4.0, multimedia, energy, eHealth, public safety, smart cities, artificial intelligence, and big data.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
