Innovations in Intelligent Transportation Systems
This special issue belongs to the section "Transportation and Future Mobility".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Innovations in intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) are reshaping how people and goods move across land and air. This Special Issue welcomes original research and high‑quality reviews that advance data‑ and model‑driven methods for the design, management, and operation of transportation networks. Topics of interest include connected and autonomous vehicles, traffic management and control, cooperative and V2X communications, and smart infrastructure, as well as urban/advanced air mobility, airport and terminal operations, and flow‑centric airspace management. Methodological contributions may span optimization (deterministic, stochastic, and robust), simulation and digital twins, uncertainty quantification, sensor fusion, machine learning, and human‑in‑the‑loop decision support. We particularly encourage papers that quantify trade‑offs among efficiency, safety, resilience, capacity, service quality, and environmental impact and that demonstrate real‑world relevance through case studies, experiments, or open datasets. Cross‑domain studies that integrate air traffic management with urban ITSs, or that couple logistics and passenger operations across modes, are especially welcome. The aim is to provide a rigorous and practice‑oriented forum that bridges theory and application, enabling scalable solutions for next‑generation mobility systems. The scope of this Special Issue includes the following topics:
- Intelligent transportation systems (ITSs);
- Traffic management and control;
- Urban/advanced air mobility (UAM/AAM);
- Flow‑centric airspace management (ATM);
- Airport operations optimization;
- Machine learning and digital twins;
- Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV);
- V2X communications (C‑ITS).

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
