AI and Machine Learning Applications in Industrial Automation

This special issue belongs to the section “Computing and Artificial Intelligence“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the context of Industry 4.0, production systems are updated to a smart level, taking advantage of the Internet of Things (IoT), cyberphysical systems (CPS), big data, cloud computing, and cognitive systems to achieve flexible, smart, and reconfigurable manufacturing operations to address a dynamic and global market. On this subject, AI and machine learning emerge as effective tools capable of making critical decisions during industrial processes allowing manufacturing operations and control systems to learn from experiences and sensing devices to optimize industrial practice. These innovative systems thus allow increasing quality, productivity, flexibility, information accuracy, and safety through CNC machines, robotics, sensing devices, and data-driven control systems.

This Special Issue aims at analyzing relevant industrial demands for AI and machine learning applications. The chosen focus is providing the state of the art and trends and understanding the main research challenges in AI and machine learning tools applied to industrial automation systems. The topics include but are not limited to industrial applications of deep learning and artificial neural networks, expert systems, fuzzy and neuro-fuzzy systems, genetic algorithms, multi-agent systems, bio-inspired algorithms, and hybrid approaches. Application examples to industrial processes include intelligent manufacturing systems, intelligent control systems, intelligent machines and robots, AI in cybersecurity, AI for predictive maintenance, smart sensors and sensing technology, AI-based condition monitoring, IoT-enabled smart systems, and intelligent signal processing and data analyses.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
