Novel Advances in Marine and Petroleum Geology
This special issue belongs to the section "Marine Science and Engineering".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The ocean covers three-quarters of the Earth's surface and contains abundant hydrocarbon resources, playing a key role in the sustainable development of human society and natural environment. In recent years, in response to the demand for marine geological research and oil and gas exploration and development, a series of important research progress has been made in the basin structural evolution and their controls on oil and gas accumulation, the construction of isochronous sequence stratigraphic framework and sedimentary evolution process, the controlling factors and reservoir-forming dynamics of oil and gas systems, the diagenetic evolution and sweet spot development mechanism of reservoirs, and trap evaluation and exploration risk analysis. In terms of fundamental theory, relevant research has delved into the controlling of deep crust–mantle processes in basin formation, as well as the dynamic coupling mechanism of hydrocarbon generation and reservoir formation under the superposition of tectonic, volcanic, climatic and marine/lake environmental events. Technological progress is also remarkable, and the application of high-precision seismic imaging, digital rock physics, artificial intelligence and other methods is significantly improving our ability to characterize and predict deep reservoir and complex oil and gas systems.
Potential topics including but not limited to the following:
- Structural and geological evolution of marginal seas and sedimentary basins;
- Sedimentary records of tectonic and climatic changes;
- Sedimentary evolution and its resource and environmental effects;
- Reconstruction of paleoclimate, paleoenvironment and paleoceanography;
- Source-to-sink analysis;
- Formation and distribution mechanism of marine hydrocarbon resources;
- Processing, interpretation, and resource evaluation methods and technologies for hydrocarbon exploration and development data;
- The application of big data and AI technology in marine and petroleum geology.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
