The Application of Biopolymer Composite in Water Treatment

This special issue belongs to the section “Environmental Sciences“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The industrial development of humanity brings not only beneficial aspects but also a negative impact due to the pollution of soil, air, and water.

This reality has put a new task in front of the science and engineering industries: that of solving increasing pollution. In this direction, a lot of modern researchers are devoted to fighting the water pollution, and new materials are developed for this. The rational design of these new materials is essential because the wrong material can introduce secondary pollution alongside the treated material at the end of life. So, the materials used for water treatment should posses biocompatibility and biodegradability, and, obviously, the most appropriate materials are biopolymers. Moreover, biopolymers avoid the use of fossil fuels, which are in depletion. As a result, many materials for water treatment are based on biopolymers, such as chitosan, alginate, and biocellulose, among others, and especially on biopolymer composites, which show enhanced mechanical and physical–chemical properties. Because water treatment procedures are based on surface processes which take place at the interface of a material with water, articles with a high specific surface are preferred, such as fibers, membranes, or hydrogels.

The research in this field is developing very quickly, highlighting the need for this Special Issue of Applied Science. We invite you to publish your work in this Special Issue and we look forward to your contributions

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
