Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Crisis and disaster management, situational awareness, and decision support systems in aerial, terrestrial, space, and maritime (surface and underwater) domains are increasingly being enhanced through the adoption of advanced computational methodologies. State-of-the-art technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), Earth observation, computer vision, and signal, image, and point cloud processing are contributing to the development of systems capable of operating reliably under complex and dynamic conditions and environments.
In parallel, emerging technologies such as explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), Large Language Models (LLMs), and Vision–Language Models (VLMs) are expected to play a significant role in this domain. These approaches can improve accuracy and robustness while also enhancing explainability, interpretability, and responsiveness, which are essential for building trustworthy systems in several applications.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews from both academia and industry focusing on the aforementioned fields are welcome. Manuscripts are invited that address theoretical foundations, methodological innovations, system architectures, and applications relevant to crisis management, situational awareness, and decision support. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Novel applications of AI, ML, and DL for crisis and disaster management as well as decision support;
- Multimodal sensing, data fusion, processing, and risk assessment for enhanced situational awareness;
- Explainable and trustworthy AI frameworks for critical systems;
- Exploitation and integration of LLMs and VLMs into critical systems and human–machine interaction;
- Cross-domain approaches spanning aerial, terrestrial, space, and maritime (surface and underwater) domains.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
