Digital Construction: BIM, Digital Twins and Facility Management

Digital transformation is reshaping how buildings and infrastructure are designed, constructed, operated, and maintained. Building Information Modeling (BIM), digital twins, and digital approaches to facility management offer opportunities to connect information across asset life cycles, support informed decisions, and improve built environment performance. However, achieving these benefits requires advances in interoperability, data quality, information continuity, and the integration of digital technologies into practical workflows.

This Special Issue aims to bring together research on methods, technologies, and applications that connect digital construction with facility management. Particular emphasis is placed on the integration of BIM and digital twins with sensor networks, artificial intelligence, simulation, and decision-support systems to address challenges throughout the asset life cycle.

We welcome original research articles and comprehensive reviews addressing topics such as BIM-based information management; digital twin development and validation; automated data acquisition, semantic integration and data fusion for facility management; building inspections and predictive maintenance; energy and environmental performance assessment; and renovation, adaptation, and circular resource management. Contributions examining open standards, human-centered applications, implementation barriers, and organizational readiness are also encouraged.

By combining methodological advances with evidence from practical applications, this Special Issue seeks to advance interoperable, reliable, and sustainable digital approaches to construction and facility management.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
