Human-Centered Assistive Technologies and Artificial Intelligence for Chronic Care and Independent Living
This special issue belongs to the section "Biomedical Engineering".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Chronic diseases, population aging, and the growing complexity of health and social care needs are accelerating the adoption of assistive technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) to support older adults across healthcare, community, long-term care, and home settings. Assistive technologies, digital health platforms, remote monitoring systems, virtual and augmented reality, wearable devices, robotics, and AI-enabled services offer new opportunities to promote autonomy, rehabilitation, care coordination, social participation, and quality of life.
Effective translation of these technologies into real-world care environments requires rigorous design, integration, and validation. Key challenges include usability and accessibility, sensor and algorithm performance, data quality, interoperability with existing digital infrastructures, reliability, personalization, and robustness across heterogeneous users and settings. Human–computer interaction also needs particular attention, as does the evaluation of technical, clinical, and functional outcomes.
This Special Issue welcomes original research, reviews, case studies, and methodological contributions that focus on the design, development, integration, validation, and real-world evaluation of assistive technologies and AI for chronic care and independent living. Topics of interest include AI-enabled decision support, sensing and remote monitoring, wearable and robotic systems, virtual and augmented reality, rehabilitation technologies, interoperable digital health platforms, and user-centered evaluation of technology performance, usability, effectiveness, functional independence, and quality of life.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
