Technology-Driven Approaches to Sports Training and Rehabilitation
This special issue belongs to the section "Biomedical Engineering".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Technological advancements continue to transform the field of sports and physical activity, providing new possibilities for assessment, training, and performance optimization across different populations and skill levels. There is a growing need to understand how technology can be integrated into both sports training and sports-related rehabilitation to support evidence-based decision-making and improve performance-oriented outcomes.
Within this framework, the comprehensive evaluation of movement and physical activity is essential for designing preventive training programs, guiding rehabilitation processes in athletes and physically active individuals, and refining sport-specific techniques. Technology-driven approaches, including advanced measurement systems, wearable devices, motion analysis, and data analytics, enable the capture of kinetic, kinematic, physiological, and contextual variables that are crucial for monitoring training load, managing injury risk, and supporting safe and effective return-to-sport strategies.
We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue on “Technology-Driven Approaches to Sports Training and Rehabilitation”. This Special Issue aims to showcase cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews addressing the integration of technology into the assessment, monitoring, and enhancement of sports training, as well as the design and implementation of rehabilitation programs specifically within the sports context. The goal is to provide an updated overview of emerging trends, methodological innovations, and applied solutions that support training optimization, sports injury prevention, performance improvement, and evidence-based decision-making for return to sport.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Development and validation of technological tools and systems for assessing sports performance and physical activity in athletes and active populations.
- Technology-based methods for monitoring training load, fatigue, recovery, and injury risk in sports settings.
- Technology-driven approaches to sports technique analysis, real-time feedback, and decision support for coaches, practitioners, and athletes.
- Technological applications in sports-related rehabilitation and return-to-sport processes, including monitoring of functional recovery and long-term athlete health.
We look forward to receiving your contributions and to assembling a collection of high-quality papers that reflects current advances and future directions in technology-driven approaches to sports training and rehabilitation.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
