Fuel Cells: From Electrochemical Processes to Material Components
This special issue belongs to the section "Energy Science and Technology".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Fuel cells are key technologies for the global transition toward clean, efficient and sustainable energy systems. Their ability to directly convert the chemical energy of hydrogen and other fuels into electrical energy with high efficiency and low emissions make them attractive for applications in transportation, stationary power generation, portable electronics and distributed energy systems. Despite significant progress, further advances in electrochemical processes, functional materials and cell components are required to improve their performance, durability, scalability and economic viability.
This Special Issue aims to highlight recent developments in the science and engineering of fuel cells, with a particular focus on translating fundamental discoveries into practical applications. We invite original research articles and reviews covering electrochemical reaction mechanisms, electrocatalysts, membranes, electrodes, bipolar plates, gas diffusion layers, interconnects and other fuel cell components. Contributions on advanced materials synthesis, nanostructured materials, computational modelling, in situ and operando characterization degradation mechanisms, manufacturing technologies and system integration are also welcome. Studies involving proton exchange membrane, solid oxide, alkaline, direct methanol, microbial and reversible fuel cells, as well as hybrid energy systems and renewable hydrogen integration, are encouraged.
This Special Issue seeks to provide a multidisciplinary platform for researchers and engineers to present innovative solutions that advance fuel cell technologies from fundamental electrochemical processes to high-performance materials and practical engineering applications, thereby supporting the development of next-generation sustainable energy systems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
