Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
As global decarbonization efforts intensify, the role of clean internal combustion engines (ICEs) remains crucial, particularly in areas such as the heavy-duty transport, marine, and aviation sectors, where electrification faces significant challenges. Advanced ICE technologies continue to provide immediate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, enabling the transition to sustainable energy solutions.
This Special Issue is dedicated to advancing research and innovation in combustion engine and fuel technologies. It emphasizes improving engine efficiency and combustion, reducing emissions, and supporting the transition towards cleaner energy. Next-generation ICEs will include various advanced combustion modes, offering cleaner and more efficient performance with both conventional and alternative fuels.
We encourage both original research and review article submissions for this Special Issue, to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among researchers, engineers, and industry professionals. Our aim is to contribute to the advancement of ICE technologies, moving us towards a sustainable future.
Topics covered in this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Internal Combustion Engines: Dual-fuel engines, direct injection, HCCI, alternative fuels, biofuels, ignition, injection strategies, turbulent jet ignition, automotive, and more.
- Combustion: Dual-fuel combustion, spray, flame, advanced diagnostics techniques, oxy-fuel combustion, fuel additive, and related areas.
- Emissions: Soot formation, NOx, N2O, unburned ammonia, carbon-based emissions, after treatment, etc.
- Alternative fuels: Ammonia, hydrogen, biofuels, e-fuels, and other low-carbon options.
We look forward to your valuable contributions to this timely and significant area of research.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
