AI and Connectivity in the Internet of Unmanned Vehicles: Challenges and Innovations
This special issue belongs to the section “Transportation and Future Mobility“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced connectivity is revolutionizing the field of the Internet of Unmanned Vehicles (IoUV), an ecosystem encompassing drones, autonomous cars, and unmanned maritime vehicles. This integration promises to unlock unprecedented levels of autonomy, coordination, and intelligence in applications ranging from smart logistics and precision agriculture to urban mobility and public safety. However, the realization of a truly seamless and robust IoUV network is fraught with significant challenges, such as the demand for ultra-reliable, low-latency communication (URLLC) in dynamic environments, the need for resilient AI algorithms that can operate under computational and connectivity constraints, and the critical importance of security, privacy, and trustworthy collaboration among heterogeneous unmanned systems. Addressing these intertwined challenges requires groundbreaking innovations at the intersection of networking, distributed computing, and machine learning.
We are pleased to invite submissions to this Special Issue, which will compile the latest advancements and transformative solutions to existing bottlenecks, as well as foster discussion on the future research directions that will shape the next generation of intelligent, connected unmanned systems.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- AI-driven communication and networking protocols;
- Distributed and federated learning for IoUV;
- Edge–cloud computing and task offloading;
- Secure, safe, and trustworthy AI.
I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
