Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into automation marks a significant shift in industry operations, enhancing traditional rule-based processes with the ability to learn and adapt. This is especially impactful in manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, energy, and transportation by improving efficiency, reducing costs, and ensuring safety. AI-driven automation allows for greater precision, scalability, and autonomy. Machine learning algorithms analyze data from various sources to optimize processes in real-time, crucial for making quick and accurate decisions in complex environments. Furthermore, AI enhances system adaptability to changes in input, conditions, or external factors. Autonomous decision making, enabled through reinforcement and deep learning, permits systems to operate without human intervention, ideal for hazardous or remote scenarios. Lastly, AI-driven automation is playing a key role in advancing sustainability and energy efficiency. By optimizing resource allocation and reducing waste, AI-powered systems can contribute to the development of greener technologies and practices. For example, AI can be used to optimize energy consumption in smart grids, reduce material waste in manufacturing, and enhance the efficiency of logistics networks.

This Special Issue will focus on the latest advancements, case studies, and best practices in the application of AI to automation, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • AI for autonomous robotics and multi-robot systems;
  • AI in the smart grid, industrial IoT, and healthcare;
  • AI for predictive maintenance and fault detection in automated systems;
  • AI-based human–robot collaboration and augmented reality in automation;
  • AI for autonomous vehicles and intelligent transportation systems;
  • Deep learning and reinforcement learning for adaptive automation;
  • AI for energy-efficient and sustainable automated systems;
  • AI in healthcare automation, medical robotics, and precision medicine.

This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for researchers, practitioners, and industry experts to share their insights, innovations, and experiences in leveraging AI to advance the field of automation. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange, this initiative seeks to address the challenges and opportunities associated with the integration of AI into automated systems, ultimately driving the development of smarter, more efficient, and resilient technologies for the future.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
