Intelligent Assistive and Rehabilitation Technologies: AI, Embodied Intelligence, and Human–Machine Interaction
This special issue belongs to the section "Computing and Artificial Intelligence".
Special Issue Information
Artificial intelligence is increasingly transforming assistive and rehabilitation technologies by enabling systems that can perceive users and their environments, interpret motor and behavioural information, adapt to individual needs, and support effective human–machine interaction. In this context, robotics represents a major expression of embodied intelligence, translating perception, learning, reasoning, and decision-making into physical interaction with people and the surrounding environment. However, the field also encompasses non-robotic technologies, including intelligent sensing, computer vision, wearable and contactless monitoring, adaptive interfaces, and data-driven tools for assessment, assistance, and rehabilitation.
This Special Issue aims to present original research and high-quality reviews on intelligent technologies designed to enhance autonomy, functional recovery, safety, inclusion, and quality of life. Relevant topics include assistive and rehabilitation robotics, embodied AI, machine and deep learning, multimodal sensing, human motion analysis, intelligent prostheses and exoskeletons, human–robot and human–machine interaction, personalised control and decision-support systems, and objective motor or functional assessment. Particular attention will be given to studies that demonstrate methodological rigour, user-centred design, explainability, usability, and validation in clinical, domestic, occupational, or other real-world settings. Contributions addressing ethical, accessibility, and translational challenges are also welcome. We welcome interdisciplinary contributions that bridge engineering, computer science, biomechanics, rehabilitation, healthcare, and the human factors sciences.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
