Advanced Wind Turbine Control and Optimization
This special issue belongs to the section “Energy Science and Technology“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleague,
This Special Issue focuses on the latest advancements in wind turbine control systems and optimization strategies, aiming to enhance performance, efficiency, and reliability in wind energy conversion. With the increasing global demand for wind energy, turbines must operate effectively in diverse and challenging environmental conditions, including turbulent winds and offshore environments. This Special Issue invites contributions that explore innovative control algorithms and optimization techniques, to tackle these challenges.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Advanced Control Strategies: Model predictive control, adaptive and robust control, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven control, and machine learning-based control.
- Load Mitigation Methods: Techniques to minimize fatigue and extreme loads, vibration, and structural stresses to extend the operational lifetime of turbines. Examples include individual pitch control and LiDAR-assisted control.
- Optimization of Power Output: Methods for maximizing energy capture, enhancing the power curve, and turbine control strategies that minimize wake effects in wind farms.
- System State Estimation and Condition Monitoring: Kalman filter or observer design application to estimate turbine system states, alongside advanced AI and machine learning techniques for system monitoring and fault detection.
This Special Issue aims to bring together researchers, industry experts, and practitioners to share insights and breakthroughs in wind turbine technology. We welcome original research, case studies, and reviews that address both theoretical and practical aspects of wind turbine control and optimization, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient future in wind energy systems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
