Advances in Natural Product Chemistry
This special issue belongs to the section "Chemical and Molecular Sciences".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Natural product chemistry is a fundamental field of science, situated at the intersection of chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, and biotechnology, playing a key role in the discovery of new bioactive substances with medical, food, and industrial applications. Natural products, obtained from plants, microorganisms, and marine organisms, have long been a major source of drugs, dietary supplements, and innovative therapeutic agents.
Recent developments in natural product chemistry have been driven by the advancement of modern techniques for isolation, identification, and structural characterization. Advanced methods, such as high-performance chromatography (HPLC), mass spectrometry (MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and combined spectroscopic techniques, have allowed the rapid and precise elucidation of complex chemical structures. These technologies have led to the identification of new classes of bioactive compounds, including polyphenols, alkaloids, terpenes, and glycosides, with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer potential.
Another important progress is the integration of biotechnology and green chemistry in the study of natural products. In vitro cultivation of plants, the use of genetically modified microorganisms, and ecological extraction processes contribute to the sustainable production of compounds of interest, thereby reducing environmental impact. Also, “omics” approaches (genomics, metabolomics) facilitate the understanding of biosynthetic mechanisms and the optimization of the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites.
Advances in natural product chemistry open new perspectives for the development of innovative therapies, functional foods, and safe and effective natural products. The integration of modern technologies with interdisciplinary research strengthens the role of this field in addressing the current challenges in health, nutrition, and environmental protection.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
