Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The rapid advancement of Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence (AI), the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), cloud-edge computing, and digital twins has fundamentally transformed modern manufacturing systems. Smart manufacturing integrates intelligent sensing, real-time data analytics, automation, and cyber–physical systems to improve productivity, flexibility, and sustainability. However, increasing manufacturing complexity requires decision-makers to simultaneously optimize multiple conflicting objectives, such as production cost, energy consumption, product quality, delivery reliability, resource utilization, and carbon emissions. Consequently, multi-objective optimization and intelligent scheduling have become indispensable research topics for developing efficient, resilient, and sustainable manufacturing systems. Recent advances in machine learning, reinforcement learning, mathematical programming, simulation optimization, and digital twin technologies provide new opportunities to solve complex scheduling and optimization problems. Therefore, innovative methodologies that combine optimization techniques with intelligent manufacturing technologies are of growing interest to both academic researchers and industrial practitioners. This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the latest theoretical developments, computational methods, and practical applications related to multi-objective optimization and scheduling in smart manufacturing. We invite original research articles and comprehensive review papers that address novel optimization models, intelligent algorithms, decision-support systems, and real-world implementations for improving manufacturing efficiency, sustainability, robustness, and resilience. Contributions that bridge theoretical advances with industrial applications are particularly encouraged.

Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to:

  • Multi-objective optimization in smart manufacturing systems;
  • AI-driven scheduling and decision-making;
  • Mathematical programming and exact optimization methods;
  • Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)-enabled manufacturing systems;
  • Sustainable and green manufacturing optimization;
  • Energy-efficient production scheduling;
  • Carbon-aware manufacturing and low-carbon production planning;
  • Predictive maintenance and maintenance scheduling optimization;
  • Simulation-based optimization and digital manufacturing;
  • Data-driven optimization and machine learning applications;
  • Intelligent decision-support systems for manufacturing;
  • Applications of optimization techniques in Industry 4.0.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
