Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The transition to sustainable energy systems is a global imperative in response to pressing environmental challenges and the urgent need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. In this context, bioenergy has emerged as a key renewable energy source, offering versatile and scalable solutions for low-carbon energy production. Derived from a wide range of biological materials—including agricultural residues, forestry by-products, organic waste, and dedicated energy crops—bioenergy supports climate change mitigation, energy security, and sustainable development.

This Special Issue, “Recent Technologies and Applications of Bioenergy”, aims to highlight the most recent advancements in bioenergy research and development, and presents a curated collection of cutting-edge studies, innovative technologies, and practical applications that demonstrate the growing role of bioenergy across various sectors of the global energy landscape.

Recent progress in bioenergy conversion technologies—spanning biochemical, thermochemical, and physicochemical approaches—has significantly enhanced the efficiency and viability of bioenergy systems. Developments in anaerobic digestion, fermentation, pyrolysis, gasification, torrefaction, and hydrothermal processes have enabled the production of diverse energy carriers, such as biogas, bio-oil, syngas, and solid biofuels, with improved energy yields and lower environmental impacts.

The articles included in this Special Issue explore a wide range of bioenergy applications, from electricity and heat generation to advanced biofuels for transport and industrial use. Particular attention is given to the integration of bioenergy with other renewable technologies, fostering hybrid systems that optimise energy efficiency and enhance grid stability. Additionally, the valorisation of bioenergy co-products and the role of bioenergy in circular economy models are also addressed.

We hope this Special Issue will contribute to ongoing efforts to expand the knowledge base, inspire innovation, and promote the deployment of bioenergy technologies as part of a sustainable and resilient global energy transition.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
