Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Welding and metal additive manufacturing have become key enabling technologies for producing high-performance components in aerospace, automotive, energy, marine, biomedical, and other advanced engineering industries. Recent developments in intelligent welding systems, robotic manufacturing, wire- and powder-based additive manufacturing processes, digital manufacturing, and advanced monitoring technologies have significantly expanded manufacturing capabilities. At the same time, increasing industrial demands require improved process reliability, product quality, sustainability, and productivity.

Despite considerable progress, several scientific and technological challenges remain, including process stability, defect formation, residual stresses, distortion control, microstructure evolution, mechanical performance, corrosion behavior, process qualification, and real-time quality assurance. The integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced sensing, and data-driven process optimization is opening new opportunities for developing intelligent manufacturing systems capable of autonomous decision-making and adaptive process control.

This Special Issue aims to provide an international forum for the latest advances in welding and metal additive manufacturing technologies. Original research articles and review papers addressing experimental investigations, numerical modeling, intelligent process control, advanced characterization, digital manufacturing, and industrial applications are particularly welcome. Contributions demonstrating interdisciplinary approaches that combine materials science, manufacturing engineering, automation, artificial intelligence, and computational modeling are especially encouraged.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Arc welding and resistance welding;
  • Laser, electron beam, and hybrid welding;
  • Metal additive manufacturing (WAAM, DED, LMD, and PBF);
  • Process modeling and simulation;
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning;
  • Process monitoring and quality control;
  • Process optimization and parameter development;
  • Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties;
  • Residual stresses and distortion;
  • Corrosion behavior and surface engineering;
  • Non-destructive testing and inspection;
  • Robotic and automated manufacturing;
  • Smart manufacturing and Industry 5.0;
  • Sustainable manufacturing technologies;
  • Industrial applications and case studies.

Articles and comprehensive review papers are both welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
