Stem Cells: Latest Advances and Future Perspectives
This special issue belongs to the section "Applied Biosciences and Bioengineering".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The medicine of the future is personalized, powered by artificial intelligence, and focused on safer and more efficient therapeutic strategies. Stem cells are among the key players in the development of personalized regenerative medicine, disease, and implantation modeling. Different types of stem cells, including embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells, and adult stem cells can be isolated from various tissues and organs using diverse protocols that influence their capacity for self-renewal, differentiation, and therapeutic potential. In addition, cancer stem cells represent a critical subpopulation involved in tumor initiation, progression, metastasis, and therapy resistance, making them an important target for modern cancer research.
A deeper understanding of the practical aspects of stem cell isolation, in vitro maintenance, characterization, and differentiation is essential for advancing effective stem cell-based therapies and disease modeling approaches.
In this Special Issue, our goal is to bring together high-quality research and review articles highlighting recent advances in both fundamental and applied stem cell studies, including cancer stem cells and their biomedical applications.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following areas:
- Opportunities and challenges in the use of stem cells and cancer stem cells in vivo and in vitro.
- Techniques for the isolation, culture, characterization and differentiation of human and animal stem cells.
- Disease and implantation modeling using stem cells.
- Cancer stem cells: biology, signaling pathways, therapeutic targeting, and drug resistance.
- Applications of stem cells in medicine (dentistry, orthopedics, cardiology, neurology, oncology, wound healing, endocrinology, etc.).

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
