Dear Colleagues,
Animal-visitor interactions are experiences offered by zoos, sanctuaries, and other tourism facilities in which people can be very close, and even touch, wildlife. This proximity could damage animal welfare and be a risk for the health of both animals and visitors. Proximity, however, is deemed to have a positive emotional impact on visitors, representing an excellent opportunity to communicate conservation and educational messages.
The purpose of this Special Issue is to provide an opportunity to publish original research or review articles in the field of wild animal-visitor interactions (AVIs), in the context of both zoos and aquariums as well as tourism facilities.
Contributions may include but are not limited to the following categories: theoretical contributions that expose, analyze, compare, and question different types of interactions; research articles and case reports; papers that highlight ethical issues and conflicts in the human-animal relationship and that explore the impact on the actors directly and indirectly involved in the interaction and investigate any other relevant aspects that may affect the perceptions among citizens and in society. These aspects may concern animal welfare, in terms of the positive and negative effects on it, the possible consequences on the health and emotional state of human beings as well as organizational aspects concerning the working environment, staff and management.

Manuscript Submission Information

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Animals is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
