Prepartum and Postpartum Diseases in Dairy Cattle: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Successful genetic selection for higher milk production in Holstein cows has nearly doubled average milk production during previous decades. In parallel with this, a dramatic decline occurred in reproductive performance. At the same time, reproductive performance in heifers was not affected. Improving reproductive management practices is essential to decrease the longer lactation and number of cows culled for reproductive reasons. Achieving optimum herd reproductive performance requires concentrated management, especially during the first 100 days following calving. The early postpartum breeding of dairy cows results in more calves, with higher milk production per lactation. Poor reproductive performance can reduce the number of calves born and can reduce milk production, which may increase the cost of therapy. Therefore, special attention should be pursued immediately before, during, and after calving to prevent or diagnose and treat different pre- and postpartum diseases in dairy cattle.
