Immunological Regulation and Seminal Factors in Livestock Reproduction and Breeding Efficiency
This special issue belongs to the section "Animal Reproduction".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Efficient reproduction is a fundamental determinant of productivity, economic viability, and sustainability in livestock production systems. In recent years, there has been growing attention on the role of immunological regulation and semen-related factors (including the semen microbiome) as key factors influencing semen quality, sperm functionality, fertilization success, and overall breeding performance.
Rapid advances in microbiome research, multi-omics technologies, and reproductive biotechnologies have created new opportunities to better understand the complex interactions between immune responses, microbial communities, semen components, extracellular vesicles, and sperm functional traits in the male reproductive tract. However, current knowledge remains fragmented across different disciplines, highlighting the need for an integrative platform that brings together fundamental and applied research in this evolving field.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent developments and to stimulate new research directions focused on improving reproductive efficiency, fertility management, and breeding strategies in livestock systems.
The topics of this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Immunological mechanisms regulating semen quality and male fertility.
- Diversity and functional roles of semen-related factors, including the semen microbiome.
- Host–microbiome and immune interactions in the male reproductive tract.
- Bioactive semen components, including proteins, extracellular vesicles, immune cells, metabolites, cytokines, and their roles in sperm functional traits
- Infectious and inflammatory disorders affecting reproductive performance.
- Oxidative stress and immune-related pathways in sperm function.
- Molecular, microbiological, proteomic, metabolomic, and other multi-omics approaches in reproductive research.
- Biomarker discovery and innovative semen evaluation technologies.
- Semen preservation, cryopreservation, and reproductive biotechnologies.
- Environmental and management-related factors influencing male fertility and breeding efficiency.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the Special Issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Animals is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
