2012 The inaugural issue was released. Plants was published as a quarterly journal.
2015 Plants was indexed in BIOSIS Previews.
2016 Plants was indexed in Scopus (Elsevier), starting with Volume 1 (Issue 1). Citations were available in MEDLINE (PubMed), full-text archived in PubMed Central.
Plants held the first online Editorial Board Member meeting.
2017 Plants received its first CiteScore (2017) of 3.21.
Plants announced the first edition of the Travel award.
2018 Plants became an affiliated journal of the Australian Society of Plant Scientists (ASPS).
Plants was indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE)—Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics), starting with Volume 5 (Issue 1).
2019 Plants adopted a monthly publication schedule.

Plants established the following sections:

  • Plant Physiology and Metabolism;
  • Phytochemistry;
  • Plant Protection;
  • Molecular Botany;
  • Plant Development and Morphogenesis;
  • Plant Ecology;
  • Plant Cell Biology;

Plants receive its first Impact Factor (2.632).
Plants published its 1000th Paper.
Plants became an affiliated journal of the Spanish Phytopathological Society (SEFV).
2020

Plants received an Impact Factor of 2.762, ranked 58/234 (Q1) in ‘Plant Sciences’.

Plants became an affiliated journal of the Spanish Society of Plant Physiology (SEFV), the Spanish Society of Horticultural Sciences (SECH) and the Italian Society of Phytotherapy (S.I.Fit.).

Plants announced the first edition of the Young Investigators Award.

Plants established the following sections:

  • Plant–Soil Interactions;
  • Plant Nutrition;
  • Plant Response to Abiotic Stress and Climate Change;
  • Plant Protection was renamed as Plant Protection and Biotic Interactions;
  • Molecular Botany was renamed as Plant Molecular Biology;
  • Plant Genetics and Genomics was renamed as Plant Genetics, Genomics and Biotechnology.

Plants organized the 1st International Electronic Conference on Plant Science.
2021

Plants received an Impact Factor of 3.935, ranked 47/235 (Q1) in ‘Plant Sciences’.

Plants established the following sections:

  • Crop Physiology and Crop Production;
  • Plant Structural Biology;
  • Plant Systems and Synthetic Biology;
  • Horticultural Science and Ornamental Plants;
  • Plant Genetic Resources.

Plants was indexed in Food Science and Technology Abstracts (FSTA)—International Food Information Services (IFIS).

Plants published its 5000th paper.
2022 Plants adopted a semimonthly publication schedule.
The year 2022 marked the 10th Anniversary of Plants.
Plants received its 2021 Impact Factor (4.658), ranked 39/239 (Q1) in ‘Plant Sciences’.
Plants announced the first edition of the Best PhD Thesis Award.
2023 Plants received its 2022 Impact Factor (4.5), ranked 43/239 (Q1) in ‘Plant Sciences’.
Plants published its 10,000th paper.
2024 Plants received its 2023 Impact Factor (4.0), ranked 46/265 (Q1) in ‘Plant Sciences’.
2025 The first Plants conference, “Plants 2025: From Seeds to Food Security”, was held in Barcelona, Spain.
Plants received its 2024 Impact Factor (4.1), ranked 45/273 (Q1) in ‘Plant Sciences’.
