Cover Story: The photobehavior of a dinitrophenyl-hydrazinylidene derivative was studied as a function of pH. The dye showed a yellow hue in its neutral form at a pH of 8, exhibiting manifest and distinct acidochromism in either acidic or basic environments, where it became red and purple, respectively. Radiative and reactive deactivation pathways were found to be negligible independently of the polarity or acidity of the medium and paralleled by ultrafast dynamics dominated by internal conversion. The latter indeed happened in the picosecond/sub-picosecond time scale, promptly releasing the photoexcitation and thus being appealing for applications of the dye as a non-fluorescent photoacoustic imaging probe.
