Cover Story: Optical detection of fluorescence of ICG accumulated in tumor lesions can be used to improve the success rate of image-guided liver biopsies. The choice of detection technology determines the performance of the device and its usability and footprint. Previous works used a camera coupled to a thin borescope to capture and quantify fluorescence intensity. By replacing the camera with a photodiode detector, the temporal resolution is improved in a more compact and lighter device. This work presents a comparative study between both detection technologies, evaluating their performance detecting fluorescent lesions in the liver and the effect of the presence of background fluorescence.
