Cover Story: Standardizing socket design with a default “neutral” alignment in transtibial prostheses can simplify the fitting process and reduce prosthetic care costs, especially in low-income countries. This study evaluated the Mercer Universal Prosthesis (MUP), which incorporates standardized alignment, against conventional prostheses (CVPs), which have a dynamic alignment. Twenty Vietnamese transtibial amputees completed clinical gait assessments using their CVPs and then immediately after an MUP fitting. The results showed enhanced joint mobility in the prosthetic limb—particularly at the hip and knee—suggesting improved gait kinematics. While the short-term outcomes are promising, further research is needed to assess long-term gait adaptation and quality of life. View this paper
