Cover Story: Aqueous zinc ions are known to lower the corrosion rate of Alloy 600 in the cooling water of pressurized water nuclear reactors (PWRs). The lower corrosion rate helps to reduce the radiation dose rate in PWRs. The present study indicates that Alloy 600 forms a duplex surface oxide in cooling water with and without 100 ppb of zinc. A similar chromium-rich inner layer (IL) forms with and without zinc in the water. However, with zinc a dense, zinc-rich outer layer (OL) is formed (two lower figures) rather than a porous Ni-rich OL (two upper figures). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy represented by the equivalent circuit indicates that the dense, Zn-rich OL reduces corrosion by inhibiting the release of nickel ions from the IL into the solution.
