Cover Story: The development of technology controlling materials’ wettability with liquid Na is important for improving equipment performance and plant safety in liquid sodium-cooled fast reactors. In this study, the iron surface was modified with fluorine gas and its wettability investigated with liquid Na. The surface morphology analysis results also examined the applicability of surface fluorination for wettability control. The cover shows how the wettability between the iron surface and liquid Na changes to either lyophilic or lyophobic, depending on the composition of fluoride layer formed on iron surface. These results prove that direct fluorination is an effective surface modification technique for controlling the wettability of iron with liquid sodium. View this paper
