Cover Story: Erosion affects soil health, nutrient cycling, and plant productivity. We investigated its biochemical impacts in erosion-affected chernozem soils of the Czech Republic using a field survey and pot experiment with Festuca rubra under nitrogen fertilization (0–250 kg N ha−1). Erosion significantly reduced soil organic carbon, and total nitrogen dehydrogenase and urease activities declined. Plant biomass yield also decreased. Nitrogen fertilization cannot compensate for this reduction. Thus, erosion-induced biochemical degradation limits plant growth and cannot be overcome by increasing mineral N inputs. View this paper
