Cover Story: A CMY palette of ceramic pigments (Cyan V-ZrSiO4, Magenta Zn(Fe,Cr)2O4 Magenta and Yellow Cr-CaWO4) were prepared by fast microwave firing (2.45 GHz, 800 W, 30 min) and by conventional electric firing (1000 °C, 3 h). Allochromatic pigment (C and Y) microwave firing did not outperform conventional calcination, but the Idiochromatic M showed superior colour performance. Nevertheless, these differences became visually negligible after incorporation into glazes. The enhanced colour properties achieved through microwave firing may indicate a beneficial non-thermal microwave effect, which improves chromatic performance. The pigments are able to keep building interiors cool: C and M fall under cool category 1 (greater than 40% NIR reflectance), while Y falls under category 2 (greater than 60%). View this paper
