Cover Story: Perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA, e.g., Nafion) degrades due to dehydration at high temperatures, while modifications enhance its conductivity and performance. Sulfonated aromatic polymers (SAPs) exhibit weak phase separation, forming narrow, tortuous ion channels and lower conductivity than PFSA at equal ion exchange capacity. While SAPs are low-cost, over-sulfonation can lead to swelling and poor mechanical stability. Phosphoric acid-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) is characterized by great thermal stability and high conductivity. Progress in PBI derivatives and composites promotes medium- and high-temperature fuel cell development. In this review, we summarize advances in PFSA, SAPs, and PBI-based membranes and analyze existing challenges and future strategies for performance improvement. View this paper
