Cover Story: Bacillus thuringiensis, a Gram-positive bacterium, synthesizes Cry, Cyt, Vip, Vpa/Vpb, and Sip proteins, targeting insects specifically by disrupting the midgut epithelium causing mortality. Other strains exhibit nematicidal, bactericidal, fungicidal, and plant growth-promoting capabilities. The draft genome sequence of B. thuringiensis INTA 103-23 reveals its multifunctional pesticidal properties, with coding sequences resembling known pesticidal proteins and biosynthetic gene clusters suggesting potential biocontrol applications. Comparative genomic analysis with Bacillus cereus sensu stricto strains strongly suggests its biocontrol capabilities against different agricultural pests. View this paper
