Cover Story: β-adrenergic receptor stimulation (β-ARS) is a critical physiological mechanism of the human heart. It regulates cardiac function in stress conditions and during exercise and plays a crucial role in multiple heart diseases. Despite its importance, only a small number of computational studies to date have addressed the mathematical modelling of β-ARS. This feature review describes the latest progress in multiscale modelling and simulation to incorporate β-ARS signalling in mathematical models of cardiac function. It outlines applications and the main scientific advances of these multiscale frameworks in the study of cardiac pathology, together with an outlook on future directions of research for their improvement, and to further progress these models to a clinical environment.
