Cover Story: This article describes research associated with human exposure to cadmium, with an emphasis on its biological targets, toxic effects, and therapeutic approaches to counteract its chronic exposure. Higher amounts of Cd in the environment result from human activities as it spreads into the air and water. The human body has a limited ability to respond to Cd exposure. The toxicity of Cd2+ is, in part, due to its ability to mimic Zn2+ and Ca2+ in their biological roles. The mechanisms of Cd-induced carcinogenesis have been related to oxidative stress with the inhibition of antioxidant enzymes, the promotion of lipid peroxidation, and interference with DNA repair systems. In this work, a total of 12 cancer types associated with specific genes coding for the Cd-metalloproteome were identified. View this paper
