Cover Story: Mitochondrial contents and their physiological properties can be heterogeneous within a single cell. The abundance of proteins in the mitochondria of a single cell depends on the position of the mitochondria within the cell. In epithelial cells, perinuclear mitochondria typically exhibit a higher protein content than peripheral mitochondria. This study analyzed the abundance gradient formed by the mitochondrial protein Tom20 in Vero cells and found that the gradient occurs immediately after cell division and depends on the distribution of individual mitochondria within a cell. The findings suggest an active distribution of mitochondria according to their protein contents. View this paper
