Cover Story: Right atrial phasic transport function can be visualized using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. It is divided into three parts: (1) reservoir function: atrial diastole during ventricular systole; (2) conduit function: subsequent passive atrial emptying, starts with the opening of the atrio-ventricular valves; (3) booster pump function: active atrial emptying (which is lost in atrial fibrillation). Parameters of right atrial reservoir and conduit function closely correlate to markers of exercise capacity and pulmonary vascular function. Furthermore, impaired reservoir and conduit function are associated with dismal cardiovascular outcomes in HFpEF patients in sinus rhythm. View this paper
