Cover Story: We compared changes in strength and regional muscle hypertrophy after training in different ranges of motion (ROM) in the seated dumbbell preacher curl exercise. Nineteen women trained in the initial ROM (INITIALROM: 0°–68°) while the other arm trained in the final ROM (FINALROM: 68°–135°) over an eight-week study period. Results: The INITIALROM protocol displayed a greater cross-sectional area (CSA) increase than FINALROM protocol at 70% of bicep length. We also observed similar increases between the protocols for CSA at 50% and for the CSA sum. Moreover, the INITIALROM protocol displayed a greater 1RM increase than FINALROM. Conclusions: Training in the INITIALROM induced greater distal hypertrophy of the bicep brachii muscle. Moreover, the INITIALROM condition promoted a greater dynamic strength increase when tested at a full ROM compared to the FINALROM. View this paper
