Cover Story: Gastrointestinal parasites are one of the most common causes of disease worldwide. Clinical diagnosis of most parasitic diseases is difficult because they do not cause characteristic symptoms. We provide information on the following aspects: (i) what and where to look for (the suitability of various biological material for searching for eggs, cysts, parasites, or their genetic material); (ii) when to collect material for diagnosis or check the effectiveness of treatment; and (iii) how (by what methods) laboratory diagnostics should be performed. Lastly, we describe laboratory "case reports" and diagnostic procedures that allowed for the effective identification of parasites. We also indicate that artificial intelligence may play a role in improving the quality of diagnostics in the near future. View this paper
