Cover Story: We study the spin-orbital splitting of the angular momentum for nonparaxial electromagnetic fields. The decomposition is calculated for a set of non-null electromagnetic knots presenting linkage for the electric and magnetic field lines. We demonstrate the relation between the spin-orbital decomposition and the magnetic and electric helicities. Even if the total angular momentum and the values of the spin and orbital momentum are the same, the behavior of the local angular momentum density depends on the time evolution of the helicities.
