Cover Story: Vasoactive intestinal peptides (VIPs) are widely distributed in the central and peripheral nervous, digestive and respiratory systems. VIPs contribute to an extensive range of physiological and pathological processes and control neuronal, epithelial, and endocrine cell function. In the current publication, we focused our studies on VIPs and VIP receptor-induced esophageal inflammation and remodeling. Our findings provided evidence that eosinophilic and mast cell accumulation in response to nerve cell-derived mediator VIP and receptor CRTH2 interaction promotes motility disfunction in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Most importantly, we showed that eosinophil and mast cell accumulation, which are directly responsible for esophageal motility dysfunction improves  following CRTH2 antagonist treatment in experimentally induced chronic EoE.
