March-2 2021 - 146 articles

Cover Story: The understanding of the basic physical relationships between molecular-scale structural variables and the macroscale properties of hydrogels exposed to different water milieus remains in its infancy. The primary objective of this article is to make progress toward the understanding and prediction of the macroscopic properties of biomedically relevant hydrogels. We emphasize that the different water environments within hydrogels, for example, pure water or phosphate buffer, lead to distinct molecular processes due to interactions between macromolecular chains and individual water molecules, resulting in systematic and predictable variation in hydrogel behavior.
