Cover Story: It has often been argued that local perceptions should be integrated with scientific knowledge of climate change for adaptation planning. However, the extent to which the two knowledge sources can be integrated in urban areas will depend on their synergy. This is especially important for cities with persistent informal settlements, where residents are often excluded from city planning. This study shows that informal dwellers' perceptions are congruent with scientific and institutional knowledge of climate change-related phenomena. Integration of their perceptions will enhance adaptation planning for marginalised urban populations. View this paper.
